Mark Cavendish surrendered the overall lead of the Tour of California on stage three after Toms Skujins claimed a surprise win.

The 'Manxman' had won both of the first two stages but was unsurprisingly lost out in the mountains in San Jose as Latvian Skujins pulled off a shock win.

However, Cavendish, who has a property in Ongar, does remain top of the sprint classification with 30 points - a lead of six points over Slovakian Peter Sagan.

The Etixx - Quick-Step rider was 103rd to finish, doing so in a time of 4.54.11, just over 21 minutes behind stage winner Skujins.

Stage four is 173.1km and runs from Pismo Beach to Avila Beach.

Stage Three (San Jose) Podium:

2. Peter Sagan (SVK), Tinkoff-Saxo
