Woodford Green with Essex Ladies athletes came away from the England Athletics Under-20 and Under-23 Championships with six medals.

The competition, held in Bedford, doubled up as the UK trials for the respective European Championships.

Joseph Dewar agonisingly missed out on gold in the final of the Under-20 100m, leading for the first 80m before falling just short with a time of 10.41 (+0.3), equalling his personal best in the windy conditions.

Daniel Rowden also placed second in the Under-20 800m, finishing strongly to take silver with a time of 1.51.08 – outside of the times set this year by the two athletes finishing after him.

HCA member Jack Lawrie won the 400m hurdles in a personal best time of 51.84 but fell 0.4 seconds outside of the qualifying mark for the Under-20 Championships.

In the Under-23 competition, BUCS champion Youcef Zatat was second in the shot put with a distance of 16.82m, whilst club-mate Hugh Williams came seventh with 11.66m.

Jack Lochans tied for second in the high jump after achieving a clearance of 2.03m, whilst Kashif Jones was sixth after managing 1.94.

Another HCA member, Dan Gardner, picked up silver in the pole vault after managing 5m, while in the women’s event, Katie James took second with 3m.

There was disappointment for Ewan Dyer in the 400m hurdles, where a time of 53.82 was only good enough for fifth.

Jermaine Hamilton could only manage fifth in the 200m with a time of 21.96 (+1.3).
