Despite having no goalkeeper, Wapping ladies’ A bounced back from defeat last week against rivals East London to pick up a 1-0 win over Brentwood in the Summer League last Tuesday.
It took a while for the Wapping side to get into the game; an unfamiliar team formation proved challenging to get used to.
Towards the end of the first half it clicked, though, with the defence and midfield linking well to set up numerous chances of a goal for Clare Williamson, Karolin Schaps-Bolle, Fi Bailhache and Chloe Evans.
Despite the Wapping onslaught, Brentwood's defence held strong and at the half-time break it was 0-0.
Wapping's opponents had a good start to the second half and were unlucky not to score from a string of penalty corners. Lourdes Marenco's speedy reactions and cool head saved Brentwood's closest attempt on goal, much to the relief of her teammates.
The Wapping side also turned on the heat as the second half progressed. Some great teamwork set up their winning goal: an impressive aerial shot delivered from the top of the ‘D’ by midfielder Jess Frith.
Wapping's 1-0 victory keeps them in contention with table topping Upminster as they go into their penultimate fixture.
