Woodford Golf Club celebrates its 125th anniversary next week with a series of commemoration events ending with a dinner-dance at the RAC Club, Pall Mall.

The club was formed on Sunset Avenue in 1890 and is the second oldest in the Essex Golf Union after Royal Epping which was established in 1888.

The fixture list is:

Saturday, August 22: Men’s 125 Trophy, 18 holes stableford competition from back tees followed by an evening social event with buffet meal and live entertainment.

Monday, August 24: Juniors’ Open competition together with golf games, 11 am to 4 pm.

Tuesday, August 25: Ladies’ 125 competition. Morning 18 holes singles stableford tournament followed by lunch.

Wednesday, August 26: Seniors’ 125 competition. Three-man teams will play an 18-hole stableford morning event with five “joker” holes followed by lunch. Each team to comprise one high handicapper, one medium and one low.

Thursday, August 27: 125 Mixed Texas Scramble over 9 holes, starting at 5pm. Three person teams comprising one male, one female and one senior player off 10% of their joint handicaps.

Friday, August 28: 125 Quota competition over 9 holes; last tee-off 4pm.

Saturday, August 29: Woodford Golf Club 125th anniversary dinner-dance at the RAC Club, Pall Mall, Westminster, hosted by club Captain Terry Chisholm and his wife Coral.

On Saturday, Alan Pickett lifted the Centenary Salver when he came in with a score of 67 to pip 17-handicap Michael Cutter on a count-back.

Louis Taylor was third, a stroke adrift. The Scratch Prize went to club champion Michael Everitt with a 74 gross.

The final of the President’s Cup last week saw 10-handicap Aiden Steed triumph with a 5&4 win over Simon Ironside.

Then a couple of days later, Tom Steed, Aiden’s dad, lifted the President’s Rose Bowl in a seniors’ stableford competition.

It was Tom’s fourth triumph in the Bowl Tom scored 41 points to pip Paul Evans by a point. President Roy Webb presented the bowl to Tom in one of his last acts before he retires from the role.

Janet Beck won the Centenary Trophy with a 69 net last week. Second in the 18-hole ladies’ medal competition was Anne Gibbons on 71 net with Jill James third pin 75 net.
