Two teenage athletes have been selected to receive funding to help realise their dream of competing at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Heptathlete Naomi Harryman, 17 and from Epping, and tennis’ Joel Cannell, 17 and from Loughton, are two of ten athletes selected by East Village and SportsAid to be dubbed ‘E20 Champions’, with the money they receive helping in their quest to reach the Olympic Games in five years’ time.
Harryman, who is English Schools outdoor and Essex and Eastern Indoor long jump champion, says she will use the money to fund regular sports therapy sessions and cover the cost of the various types of footwear required to compete.
Cannell, who reached the final of the Hammamet International Tennis Federation tournament in Tunisia this year, plans on using his grant to achieve his next goal of achieving world ranking in the professional game.
