Woodford Green with Essex Ladies successfully defended their title at the Essex Cross Country Championships at Claybury.
A low score of 51 points was enough for Woodford to win and they were followed by Colchester Harriers (139) and Orion Harriers (175) in second and third.
Colchester Harriers’ Adrian Mussett had led the 12K race for around a lap, Woodford’s Tom Phillips took over and controlled the race from that point, winning by 25 seconds.
Phillips is aiming to get his name inscribed for the first time on the club’s prestigious Ken Bray Trophy, awarded to the senior male athlete who is most consistent over the key winter races.
This was only the third time in the last 40 years that a Woodford man has raised the trophy.
Green’s Tom Beedell had to settle for bronze. Woodford’s other scorers were Angus Holford (4th), Kevin Murphy (9th), Daniel Steel (16th) and Harold Wyber (18th).
