A last-gasp leveller denied Wadham Lodge the scalp of Essex Senior League leaders FC Romania at Kitchener Road.

In a game which saw four red cards handed out, Janel Alexander’s second half strike seemed to be taking Lodge to victory before the late drama.

Coach Neil Day was confused by the length of stoppage time and two red cards in the 1-1 draw.

He said: "One club official timed the goal at 102 mins and the supporters' match report said at least ten added minutes.

"Either way, it seemed considerably more than the two plus four minutes we were told on 88 minutes.

"You have to keep going until the whistle goes. We switched off and that cost us."

On the dismissals, Day added: "As a qualified referee they seemed very harsh.

"I watched three high-profile games at the weekend and similar but arguably worse incidents were treated more leniently with pundits praising ‘common sense’ refereeing.

"I saw two players with raised hands avoid cautions in the Watford v Bournemouth game and a player put his hand on a ref aggressively at Wembley without sanction.

"There needs to be consistency from the top because the financial implications which go with the dismissals have a big impact on a little club like ours."
