Matthew Chanda is considering moving up a weight to contest further titles after winning the Southern Area super bantamweight strap at York Hall on Saturday.

The 29-year-old, who lives in Chingford, beat Jamie Speight (13-8) on points over 10 rounds to claim his first belt in just his sixth fight.

But it could be Chanda’s last bout at super-bantamweight as he looks for further success.

He said: “I came in two pounds above the limit. There’s fewer bantamweights than super bantamweights so I might go up a weight to compete for titles.”

He continued: “If I go down a weight it would only be for a major title.

“I do want the English title so that, and the Southern Area, would make me mandatory for the British title.

“Having a title after my sixth fight is impressive.”

It has been an incredible rise for Chanda. He only returned to the ring in a professional capacity in 2013 after four years away following an unprovoked attack which left him with a fractured skull and deaf in one ear.

Asked if his tumultuous journey made his success sweeter, Chanda replied: “Yes, it does. I can’t believe how far I’ve come.

“[My family and friends] were all there and there were a lot of people singing as well. It still hasn’t suck in yet. It’s been a very long journey.

“I’m still feeling some aches and pains but they’re nothing I can’t cope with.”

The fight was Chanda’s first over 10 rounds. But he handled the increase.

“It was nice to get the rounds in because I felt comfortable,” he said. “Now I understand why people say it’s good to put the rounds in.”
