Wapping Hockey Club ladies secured a comfortable 3-0 win over Norwich City at the weekend.

The ladies started lethargically as they conceded a penalty flick within the first five minutes but Meg Pugh stood tall to see off the home side’s effort.

Having survived that let-off, captain Lucy Todd flicked on a great pass to Jordan Mulvaney, who made it 1-0 to the visitors.

Wapping then protected their lead as their strong defence kept City’s attacks at bay.

Norwich started the livelier of the two teams in the second period whilst Wapping struggled to control play as they began to lose composure and shape.

But it was not long before Wapping added a second goal as Kate O’Sullivan found herself in space at the back post and slotted the ball into the net.

During the final minutes of the match Todd skilfully transferred the ball from right to left to a speedy Louise Song, who fired home to complete the victory.

Captain Todd said: “It was not our best performance this season against a very physical side but we managed to get the result we deserved, even if it wasn’t the prettiest hockey we have played this season.

“Training will be key this week to put a few things straight ahead of our game against local rivals Old Loughtonians.”

Wapping men’s second team also travelled to Norwich and returned with a 1-1 draw.

The visitors began the game strongly but a number of double turnovers in their own half gave Norwich chances to take an early lead.

But a fine string of saves from Chris Monger kept his side on terms as it remained 0-0 at half-time.

The second half rarely saw 11 against 11 with cards awarded to both sides but it was Norwich who pounced first.

City bundled their way through the defence into the D for a Wapping defender to turn the ball into his own net.

But this shocked the visitors into gear and they pushed the ball high into the home side’s half to force a number of short corners.

It was striker Michael Bolle who scored the equaliser as he pushed the ball into the net at the near post.

Old Loughtonians ladies fell to a 3-1 defeat to Holcombe after beginning the match with a significant disadvantage as they only had 13 players available.

Sally Watkins had to step up to play in goal and with that Holcombe were able to take the lead in the first half.

But Loughts did not give in and this resilience paid off as Alice Melvin found the equaliser from a penalty corner.

Chances came thick and fast for Old Loughtonians and the opening third of the second half saw many break-away runs, but they were unable to capitalise on their opportunities.

And the bad news continued for Loughts as Beth McGregor was sent off for two minutes and Lisa Posnett was also sent off minutes later for questioning the decision as they eventually lost 3-1.

But there was better news for the club as their men’s first team secured a 4-2 win over newly-promoted Letchworth at their Luxborough Lane fortress.

After a dominant start from Loughts, Rory Coltham opened the securing as he dispatched with aplomb.

The hosts then soon added to the scoreline through George Lilley as he ruthlessly finished to make it 2-0.

Loughtonians continued to press after the break and added two quickfire goals, one from Mitchell Jones and a first ever career effort from Martyn Lear.

Letchworth got themselves back into the game as they scored twice but Loughts defended well to ensure they secured the win.

Croystx men secured a 5-5 draw with Brentwood in the East Men’s Hockey League Division Two on Saturday.

The ladies Firsts did not fare so well as they fell to a 3-0 loss at the hands of Sevenoaks Seconds in the East Women’s Hockey League Division One South.

The ladies Thirds could not make it back-to-back wins following their 2-0 victory over Thurrock the previous week as they lost 2-0 away to Brentwood Fourths.

There were some good results for Waltham Forest as their men’s Seconds beat their Chelmsford counterparts 4-2.

But it was the men’s fourths who secured the biggest win of the weekend as they convincingly saw off Rochford firsts 9-4.
