It was back to winning ways for Crostyx ladies firsts as they defeated Saffron Walden 3-2 in the East Women’s Hockey League Division One South at the weekend.

Crostyx took a while to get into fifth gear and made work for themselves letting in an early goal within the first 5 minutes.

But this seemed to give the away side the injection of energy needed and Alys Rowland fond space and converted with a slick strike into the bottom left of the goal past the stranded goalie.

After multiple chances for both sides it took a wonder goal from Crostyx Lucy Leel to take the lead.

Leel picked the ball up on the 25 yard line and an amazing and effortlessly looking solo run found her at the penalty spot to clinically finish on her reverse.

A light and passionate talk from Coach Simon Blockley kept the girls raring to go and the pressure continued to swamp the home side.

The visitors missed multiple chances in the D when set pieces did not go their way but managed to eventually convert their third through Sophie Smith.

Saffron Walden managed to steal a goal against the run of play late into the second half but it was too little too late and Crostyx skipped off with three points in the bag.

Wapping Hockey Club’s men’s firsts fell to a 4-1 defeat to Teddington in the National Hockey League and now sit eighth in the table.

It was a nervy start for Wapping as they put themselves under pressure unnecessarily by giving away a cheap penalty flick after only a couple minutes of play.

Teddington continued this early pressure, moving the ball effortlessly around the pitch but without creating too many goal scoring opportunities.

However, this dominant possession soon paid off, with Teddington working their way into the Wapping circle with creative interplay between their forwards to manufacture a penalty corner.

Former Great Britain striker Matt Daly, did not disappoint, disguising the direction of the ball to place it past the outstretched Wapping goalkeeper.

Wapping restarted the game with belief, playing short, sharp hockey leading to dangerous circle entries but a lack of conversion prevented Wapping getting on the score sheet.

Pressure was starting to build but a yellow card for captain Dom Graham changed the flow of the game once more.

Teddington were quick to capitalise on their 11-men advantage as Daly flicked the ball into the roof of the goal to make it 2-0.

It took until the 47th minute for Wapping to get on the board after a period of pressure for paid off with a nicely timed run from Ben Ball to slot home the ball.

However, another yellow card ended Wapping’s hopes with Rob Pryce being sent to the bench for not retreating after giving away a foul.

Wapping were still having to attack with numbers to search for the equaliser but this allowed Teddington’s strikers to utilise their extra man advantage on the counter attack, scoring two goals in quick succession.

There was some good results for the men’s seconds as they held onto the top spot in the East Division One and the ladies sixths put six past Romford’s seconds.

But things were not any better for Wapping’s ladies firsts as they succumbed to a 2-1 defeat courtesy of Old Loughtonians ladies.

The game was played at a quick and determined pace from start to finish, with the visitors opening the scoring through Maddy Gander-Smith from a well worked short corner.

Wapping pressured hard to equalise and they did just that through an equally well rehearsed short corner routine which saw a hard slap by Captain Lucy Todd get deflected beautifully into the back of the net by Jordan Mulvaney.

With the score at half-time 1-1 Old Loughts gained another good short corner which allowed them to take the lead once more through Alice Melvin.

Moments later the game took an unfortunate 20-minute break in play after Kate O'Sullivan was taken off to hospital following a ball to the head.

The last 10 minutes of the game Wapping tried to find an equaliser but failed short of doing so.

After 7 wins out of 7 in the league, the Old Loughtonians men’s first team were in a confident mood but this caused them to lose 4-3 against Harleston.

Despite losing centre back Ron Bloss, the boys started well and a well taken goal was poached by Shane Martin. A second came from Mitchell Jones, scoring a deft deflection and the second half started the same as Will Hopkins slipped it in from close range.

Unfortunately things then went pear shaped with Harleston fighting back this saw Old Loughts ship 4 quick goals due to well worked corners and breakaways.

The first loss of the season was a big wake-up call and they will be out for a huge win next week.
