Eton Manor are fourth in London One North after they battled back to beat North Walsham 31-20 at the New Wilderness on Saturday.

Manor was put under pressure and gave away a penalty which North converted in the opening minutes.

Manor found themselves 10-0 down after 11 minutes when the visitors’ Number 8 ran behind the posts for a seven-point score.

Walsham then added another as the ball was turned over from the ruck.

Nick Horton was left on his own to fend off the danger without any Manor defenders helping out and the ball was touched down for another seven-point score.

Manor had to regroup fast and they did just that when Freddie Newbury scored the home side’s first try but the conversion was missed.

Max Murray got Manor’s second try when Rhys Davis-Horne sent a long pass to his teammate who had the pace to get over the line but the conversion was missed once again.

Matt Oaks touched down the third score against his former club and this time Nick Sheppard made no mistake with the extras, tying the game at 17-17.

The second half began with neither side having much luck in breaking down the opposition defence.

Eventually, though, Walsham worked through Manor’s 22 where the home side gave away a kickable penalty from which they retook the lead 20-17.

Hooker Alexander Clarke was the man to secure Eton’s bonus point for scoring their fourth try from a lineout and Sheppard added a difficult touchline conversion.

From this point, Manor’s defence was difficult to break down and Davis-Horne helped take the score to 31-20 when he was the first to a bouncing ball.

He outsprinted the covering defenders and ran the ball behind the posts with the conversion successful.

Walsham kept attacking despite losing their captain to a yellow card late on.

They were still able to launch one final attack as they strived to earn at least a losing bonus point, making a clean break towards the Manor line.

The hosts, however, had managed to realign and despite a number of strong Walsham drives, they were unable to score.

Eton’s London One North compatriots Chingford fell to a 20-3 defeat at the hands of top-of-the-table Tring and they now sit seven points behind them.

In London Two North East, Epping Upper Clapton and Woodford were both away from home and lost to Diss and Romford & Gidea Park respectively.

Epping was beaten 25-20 with Woodford losing 46-17.

There was better news for Wanstead in London Three North East, defeating East London 49-20 at home.

Wanstead are now second in the table, having won six and lost three games, and are only three points behind leaders Harlow
