ARSENAL manager Arsene Wenger is reported to be making a sensational last-ditch move to sign Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre.

The 31-year-old French international, had according to the Sun been set to join United's bitter-rivals, but it now appears that Wenger could persuade his fellow countryman to join him at the Emirates Stadium.

The Inter Milan was reported to be undergoing a medical at City when he got a call telling him Arsenal were interested and he decided to head south straight away to speak to the Gunners.

An Arsenal insider quoted in the article confirmed: “Arsene has been looking for experienced cover for Gael Clichy and he knows all about Mikael.

"Arsene has followed his career with France and at United and the fact he is French is a bonus.”

Silvestre, who joined United for £4million in 1999 is a free-agent after being released in the summer and with the Gunners injury problems could be an excellent addition to the squad.
