PHILIPPE Senderos' days at Arsenal could be numbered if the club are successful in their surprising chase for Mikael Silvestre.

The Daily Mail suggests Arsene Wenger may cash in on the Swiss defender if their shock move for Silvestre comes off.

The Frenchman is a free agent after being released by Manchester United and after looking set to join either Manchester City or Sunderland, Wenger came in with a last-ditch effort to secure his services in a move that would add some much-needed experience to the Gunners set-up, costing only £750,000.

As Silvestre is predominantly a centre-half - although he can fill in at left-back - it looks likely that Senderos would find himself further down the pecking order. The 23-year-old is already behind Kolo Toure and skipper William Gallas, while his compatriot Johan Djourou's solid displays at the back suggest he could move ahead of him too.

Senderos has already been the subject of interest from Newcastle United this summer, who are believed to have had a £4million offer rejected by Arsenal. But if Silvestre is brought in, Wenger may be tempted to offload the defender, who has endured a torrid time with the Gunners after a number of high-profile errors.
