BOWLS ROUNDUP

CENTRAL put their name on the Ivan Fennel Cup for the third time in four years after the A team claimed a one-shot victory over Clementswood.

As with last week's Group Five Unbadged Double Fours Competition semi-final win against Ilford, it was a nail-biting match that was not decided until the final wood of the day.

Central had to pick up five shots in the final two ends to win the match, but kept their nerve to run out 41-40 victors.

In a successful week, Central also reached the final of the London Parks Jackson Shield following a comprehensive first-leg 66-32 shot victory away at Eastcote.

Central won on all three rinks: Ryan Kenny, Lou Jacobs, Terry Lichkin and Paul Whellams 26-10, Len Welton, Bob Anderson, Colin Foster and Bob Druce 19-14, and Brian Jones, Bill Wray, Steve Welsh and Rod Hudson 21-10.

Such was the margin of the win, Eastcote conceded the second leg. Central will meet either Romford or Ilford in the final - their third in three seasons - to be played at Paddington Sports and Social Club next month.

In their final Alpha Group Triples League Western Division fixture of the season, Central over-whelmed Barking by an overall 83-33 shots.

Best performing rink was Brian Jones, Terry Lichkin and Bob Druce who won by 35-7 shots.

Keith Lloyd, Mick Bird and Steve Welsh won their rink by 23-14 shots, while the rink of Bob Anderson, Lou Jacobs and Colin Foster also won by the same score.

They won all seven points on offer and ended the league campaign unbeaten, losing only eight rinks in total throughout the season. They now go through to contest the play-off semi-finals with Romford, Ilford and St Chads.

Central also completed their Foresters Triples League programme with two fixtures - and two wins - in the space of three days.

The first was a 79-62 win over Aveling Park, winning three of the four rink contested.

John Sankey, Tony Pratt and George Barham won their home rink by 26-11, Dave Crouch, John Ellis and Rod Hudson won their away rink by 22-14, and Ryan Kenny, Dave Peterson and Bill Wray won their away rink 22-10.

The only set-back was the home rink of Mick Smallwood, Peter Norgate and Len Welton who went down by 9-27.

Central gained 11 points and Aveling Park four points from the match.

The second a 77-60 victory over Silverthorn, again winning three of the four rinks played.

Derrick Kendrick, John Ellis and Mick Bird won their away rink 24-10, Dave Peterson, Peter Norgate and Bob Druce won their away rink 20-14, and Gerry Rose, Lou Jacobs and Len Welton won their home rink 16-14.

The only losing rink for Central was the home team of John Sankey, Tony Pratt and Bill Wray who went down by 17-22 shots.

Central gained another 11 points from the fixture and Silverthorn four points.

Meanwhile, The A (Tony Pratt, Peter Norgate, Keith Lloyd and Bob Druce) and C teams (Lawrence Ackerman, Mick Smallwood, Brian Jones and Mick Bird) played out a 17-17 shot tie in the Walthamstow and District Thursday Afternoon Fours League.

The B team of Dave Peterson, George Barham, Derrick Kendrick and Peter Shepherd defeated Durants Park C by 23-14 shots.

It proved to be a disappointing week for Wadham with defeat on all three rinks against Connaught in the Simon Shield. Additionally, in the Thursday Fours, the A team lost 12-21 to Loughton while the B team went down to Griffin 17-21.

Bantham and Ongar men secured promotion back to division three of the Chelmsford and District League following a one-shot win over Chelsmford.

Bill Cook, Don Hedges, Gerald Murfitt and George Miller had a fine 20-11 win, Don Wood, Jack Smyth, Dave Stacey and George Finbow won 21-19, but Ralph Cooper, Len Harris, Jim Heppel, and Dave Hodson lost 12-22.

They finished second in second position behind Burnham thanks to the overall 53-52 shots victory.

Meanwhile, a tight battle ensued in the Writtle Cup away to Southminster, with the home side grabbing the all important shots in the final ends to run out 57-46 shot winners.

Bantham needed to win two of the three rinks, but only Ralph Cooper, Len Harris, Dave Hodson and Doreen Oddy (20-16) achieved it.

In the Senior Citizens League away to Rosehill, Bantham could only manage to win on one rink (Jackie Brown, Irene Morris and Dave Hodson - 21-12) and lost 49-98 overall.

The ladies did well in their penultimate league games of the season winning both matces.

In the Harlow Triples, Jean Miller, Brenda Perrett and June Ashley's rink was the only victory (23-10), with Rita Stacey, Valerie Finbow and Pat Kitson losing 11-20, although Bantham won overall by 34-3- shots.

Buckhurst Hill won only one of four rinks against Silverthorn in the Foresters League but still picked up seven points thanks to a big 23-5 rink win from Peter Hammond, Bob Monksfield and David Powell.

In the Clarke White a 6-0 win over Connaught was engineered by Phil Joiner, Brian Nightingale, Gordon Ramsden and Ian Green winning a weather-affected match 15-5.
