ATHLETICS
DECATHLETE Daniel Awde gets his Olympic campaign underway tomorrow morning, marking the biggest moment of his career.
The Woodford Green with Essex Ladies athlete competed in the 100metres at 9.20am local time before taking part in the long jump and shot put. The evening session sees him contest the high jump before rounding off the first day with the 400metres at 10pm.
The Woodford Green resident will face five more events on Friday, with the 110metres hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and finally the 1500m.
Awde, 20, admits he is not targeting a place on the podium just yet as he has his sights set on the London Games in 2012. But he is looking to get close to the exclusive 8,000 point mark, which would represent a personal best total.
“If I can get close to 8,000 points that would be great,” he said. “There’s absolutely no reason why I can’t do it.”
