LEYTON boss Steve Newing admits he is delighted to have taken four points from the opening two Ryman League division one north games of the season.

But he insists that it is wrong to judge his newly-formed team this early in the season.

With almost a completely new side in place, the Lilywhites kicked off their league campaign with a comfortable 2-0 win away at Potters Bar Town on Saturday.

Denis Maharjan grabbed both the goals, much as he did for former club Edgware against Bar in the opening game of last season.

He opened the scoring with a simple effort on 35 minutes after good work from Steve Brady had cut open the Bar defence, and then sealed the game with his second five minutes after the break.

Leyton followed it up with a hard-fought goalless draw with Brentwood on Tuesday night to put the team in amongst the top clubs in the division.

Newing said: "I would have taken four points from two games but it is early days, you can't read too much into it.

"Teams are finding their feet and the beginning of the season always throws up some strange results.

"The two games we had were very different. We were very professional and solid on Saturday and deserved the three points.

"On Tuesday it was a little bit disappointing. It was probably a point gained rather than two points dropped."

Pleasingly for Newing, the team has yet to concede.

However, Newing - who has been without his three most natural goalscorers so far - is looking for more from his team going forward.

"It's nice to keep the clean sheets because that means we're hard to beat. But we need to get things right at the other end of the pitch," he said.

Leyton host local rivals Waltham Forest on Saturday before travelling to Enfield Town on Bank Holiday Monday. A weeks rest follows before a clash with Ware.

Only then, Newing believes, can his team assess their progress.

He said: "Waltham Forest is the local derby and Enfield are the title favourites. They are the biggest team in the league in terms of support and budget.

"They will be a couple of good games and then we've got Ware, who are a much fancied team in the division aswell.

"So the next three games are going to be interesting - heopfully we'll be able to make more of a pitch of where we are at after that run."

Meanwhile, Des Thomas, who was Leyton captain last season, has returned to the club after spending pre-season at Enfield Town.
