ARSENAL legend Ian Wright insists he does not want to see his former club's bitter rivals Spurs get relegated, but he has warned that drastic changes need to be made at White Hart Lane if that outcome is to be avoided.

Wright, the Gunners' second highest goal-scorer behind Thierry Henry, has called on Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy to give boss Juande Ramos until the end of the season to reverse the club's fortunes and rescue their ailing campaign.

Spurs have now made their worst start to a league season since the year the Titanic sunk in 1912, and pressure is growing on the Spanish coach to halt the slide, and fast.

But Wright believes the situation can be rectified, with Levy's first port of call to reassure Ramos that his job his safe.

Wright said: “It is pretty obvious the North London club’s season is a mess. If I was their chairman, Daniel Levy, I would spend this morning drawing up a plan to sort it all out.

“Firstly, I would call Juande Ramos into my office and tell him we were definitely not going to sack him.

“I would give him until the end of the season — whatever happened.”

With Ramos in no doubt as to his value to the club, Wright insists he must then be given enough money by the Tottenham board to make three vital signings in January, with AC Milan pair Gennaro Gattuso, Gianluca Zambrotta and Wigan's Emile Heskey his picks.

The club have already shelled out over £80million this summer on the likes of David Bentley, Luka Modric, Giovani Dos Santos and Heurelho Gomes, but Wright argued that it is characters that will take the team by the scruff of the neck that the team are really in need of.

“I would then give Ramos enough money to sign who he wanted in January — with Gennaro Gattuso, Gianluca Zambrotta and Emile Heskey the top three players on my list,” he continued.

“If Ramos knew he was definitely staying, and that he would be allowed to bring in fresh players when the transfer window reopens, then all the fans would have no choice but to get behind him. “The current squad, even though some may have a problem with Ramos, would know it was pointless rocking the boat as the gaffer was going nowhere.

Finally, Wright has urged Ramos to tell his 'under-performing stars' to pull their fingers out and start hitting the form their hefty price tags warrant, with £16million flop Darren Bent the man responsible for banging in the goals as Roman Pavlyuchenko and Frazier Campbell continue to adapt.

“It would be important to have a face-to-face chat with the team’s under-performing stars,”said Wright.

“Roman Pavlyuchenko has yet to adjust and Fraizer Campbell is still young, so I would still be looking for Bent to score the goals.

“Wing man Aaron Lennon also needs a good talking to. He should be playing for England, not scraping a place in the Spurs team. He has the quality but has to be more positive and to work harder.

“Luka Modric has not made a great impact, particularly when you consider he cost more than £16million. But I would still play him.

“Another new boy who has not been amazing is David Bentley. The player has quality but seems terrified of making a mistake, so is unable to express himself or play with any freedom.

“I would play him in a floating role behind the main striker, where he does not have to worry about his defensive duties.
