WALTHAM ABBEY eased their relegation fears with a vital 3-0 victory over fellow strugglers Margate.
A brace from Ricci Crace and a spectacular solo effort from George Chanda – the defender's first goal for the club – ensured the Abbotts moved to within three points of safety in Ryman Premier Division.
Crace poked the ball home from a corner to give the visitors the lead. Abbey then had to withstand an extended spell of pressure from the hosts, but they had the chance to double their advantage when they were awarded a penalty for handball. However, James Elmes saw his spot-kick saved.
Crace made amends for that miss when he fired in a volley just after the hour mark, and Chanda wrapped up the points with an excellent individual effort.
The result made it three wins on the bounce for Abbey, which has lifted their hopes of avoiding the drop.
