WALTHAMSTOW handler Seamus Cahill kept up his amazing start to life at the Chingford Road track with an excellent one-two in the Ocean Trailers Puppy Stakes final on Saturday.

Noirs Ted had started favourite to take the £2,500 spoils after two brilliant displays in the opening rounds of the competition. But a slow break from the traps let in kennelmate Gottabe Rooney, who stopped the clock in 28.84secs and some three lengths clear at the winning line.

Cahill's kennel has certainly been in top form ever since his arrival at Walthamstow in February, and this latest success that followed February's Arc win with Milldean Billy, certainly delighted the charismatic Irishman.

He said: "Things have gone really well for us since we came to Walthamstow and we couldn't have asked for a better start.

"Noirs Ted had been favourite before the race but we knew that Gottabe Rooney would also do well from the one box, and on the night he performed brilliantly.

"To get a one-two in any final is a fantastic result and we couldn't have asked for any more from the dogs.

"Gottabe Rooney will probably have a couple of weeks off now while we decide what we do with him next, while Noirs Ted goes straight into action in the Derby at Wimbledon this week."

Stow trainers will put up 32 runners in a field of 170 dogs vying to win greyhound racing's biggest prize.

Noirs Ted and the Mark Wallis-trained pair of January Tiger and Ronnies Champion have secured the best backing from punters to date of all the Walthamstow-based runners.

Back to the Stow and a strong looking card is likely to throw up some excellent racing, with the pick of the action featuring a 475m hurdle race.

Down as the fifth contest on the night Wallis' Grand national winner Lethal Rumble has been badly drawn in two in a race that also features another middle runner and three wide performers. Cahill's Senahel Leon in six may make the most of any potential early trouble, as he showed he has the early pace to break clear when winning a similar race last week in a stunning 29.41secs. John Gammon's (Hove) Free Air may also have similar joy from the one box, although he is more likely to make up any possible triffecta.

Ocean Trailers Puppy Stakes finalists Asia and Courts Ad Queen will renew rivalries in a race six puppy standard.

The Puzey trained Asia finished sixth on Saturday and is likely to once again find himself behind Ernie Gaskin's Courts Ad Queen who trailed home in fifth at the weekend.
