THE Lee Valley Lions ice hockey team have announced that Deryk Beeson is their new manager for the 2006/07 season.

After a difficult English National Ice Hockey League campaign last year Beeson said: "I enjoy a challenge and the more the odds are against us in the minds of others the more determined we should be. I am determined that this year will be a considerable improvement on the last.

"Although we may not top the league it is achievable, with the right attitude, to finish at least three places up on last season and that will be our main goal.

"The aim over the years to follow will be to reach the upper echelons of the league." Last year saw the Lions return to senior hockey for the first time in ten years, and after a turbulent time they are looking to turn things around.

It is hoped that the services of several key players will be retained, with trials for new and existing players to be held from July 11.

Beeson added: "I am pleased that more than a few of the players from last season have expressed an interest in returning.

"I hope that the supporters who came last year will return and that the change in personnel will encourage new Lions fans to give ice hockey a try."
