Hill leave it to the last to move into second round of national team cup

BUCKHURST Hill Bowls Club moved into the second round of the English National Top Team Competition after beating Connaught with the last wood of the game.

Malcolm Lord won the Two Wood Singles 14-8 and Ian Green won the singles 21-19 to put Hill into the lead before Connaught won the Pairs and the Triples to leave the result hinging on the Fours.

On the last end the match was 20-20 and, with Connaught holding shot, it was down to Roger Pike to win the game with the last shot.

Meanwhile, in the Simon Shield Hill lost 2-6 to Wadham, Mac Magudia, Glen Stephens, Jim Golder and Ian Smith being the only winners, 27-22.

In the Thursday Fours, the A team of David Nathan, Roy Davies, Bob Monksfield and John Roper beat the E team 20-18. The B team claimed the match against Orford House A.

The C team lost to Larsens A, while the D team of Barry Clark-Ward, Brian Nightingale, Chris Powles and Malcolm Lord beat Loughton A 20-11.

BANTHAM and Ongar Bowls didn't get their Essex and Herts League season off to a good start after back to back defeats.

The team lost 58-63 to a strong Standon and Puckeridge in the first game.

Dave Stacey skipped the winning rink of Ralph Cooper, Joan Murfitt, and Gerald Murfitt 24-10, while Bill Cook, George Miller, Joan Cooper and Jim Heppel lost 16-23 and Jackie Brown, John Pledge, Don Hedges and George Finbow lost 18-30.

And, Bantham lost by just four points (45-49) at home to Bishop's Stortford in the second game, although the team had two winning rinks.

Irene Morris, Eric Burns, Gerald Murfitt and Jim Heppel won 18-15, and Hazel Issitt, Cliff Morris, David Hodson, and George Finbow won 18-12, But George Miller, Pat Burns, Don Hedges and Ron Rotheray lost 9-22.

Meanwhile, Bantham entertained Quendon in a friendly match and won all three rinks.

Rita Stacey, Don Wood, Mike Nash and Sheila Nash won 32-8; June Keys, Dave Stacey, Brenda Perrett and Eric Monk won 29-4; Stan Bertschin, Jack Smyth, Beth Stables and Doreen Oddy won 29-4.

WANSTEAD Bowls Club were left stunned by an Aldersbrook side in their opening fixture of the Redbridge Afternoon League season.

The hosts were beaten on both rinks for a 6-0 points reverse.

Ian Robertson, Jim Sidnell, Len Prendy and John Strudwick lost 20-30, while M Ahmed, Alan Edgar, The Captain and John Pluck lost 16-18.

And the club suffered the same scoreline against Barking.

Helen Lazarus, Sheila Wood, Hilary Warren and The Captain losing 12-17, and Ian Robertson, Syd Lazarus, D Sharma and Chris Strudwick narrowly being pipped 24-25.

Meanwhile, Wanstead opened their Ilford and District League title defence with a 4-6 points defeat at Clayhall.

Wanstead won on two rinks but suffered a 20 shot defeat to los the match overall.

Tony Curran, John Strudwick, Laurie Ashdown and Terry Batchelor won 23-15, and Ian Robertson, Alan Edgar, Alan Carter and John Pluck won 22-17.

But Rowland Beckett, The Captain, Steve Forrest and Bryan Kelly suffered a heavy 9-29 shots defeat.

The club also opened its Mixed League campaign with a 6-0 points win over Valentines and Ilford Ladies.
