Woodford have medal winners at university championships

ATHLETICS

WOODFORD Athletic Club with Essex Ladies had two gold medal and two silver medal winners at the British University Championships held at Bedford.

Reigning BUSA indoor champion Christian North (Bath) took the pole vault title during the first day of competition with a clearance of 5.10m.

Tara Bird (Brunel) took the second gold medal over 800m. Adopting the front-running tactics that took her to heat and semi-final victory, she ran out a comfortable winner in 2min 6.99secs.

And she later picked up a relay gold as she anchored Brunel to a rare 4x400m victory over Loughborough, recording a 53.8secs split.

Over 1500m, Linzi Snow (St Mary's) just lost out by a fraction to Emma Pallant as she recorded 4mins 21.05secs to take silver.

Just missing out on the medals in fourth in the same event was Jessica Sparke (St Mary's).

Also winning silver was Alistair Williamson in the hammer in his season's first competition with 57.98m.

Meanwhile, middle distance star Chris Reynolds opened his track season at the BMC Millfield event and comfortably won the 800m A race in 1min 49.65secs.

And, competing in Irvine, California, Britain's leading women sprint hurdler Sarah Claxton opened her season with victory in a quick 13.16secs in the 100m hurdles.
