ATHLETICS

THE first Southern Men's League match of the 2008 season brought a win for the athletes from Loughton Athletics Club.

The Division Three North encounter, at Walthamstow, saw the Loughton team triumph with 151.5 points, just nine in front of Harlow AC, with Basildon in third place.

Fine individual performances came from Gurmukh Sahans, who posted three individual wins, in the A string of the pole vault, the shot and the 110m hurdles.

Further wins came from Mitch Bellham in the 110m hurdles B from Scott Hurley in the pole vault B from Rob Sargent in the 5000m B and from Gavin Harper in the 3000m steeplechase B.

Brett Underhill scored three excellent second places, in the 1500m, the 5000m, and the 3000m steeplechase, while John McCabe and Cliff Warren provided the team back-up in the sprints, with Peter deSouza drafted in to complete the relay teams.

Team manager, Gavin Harper said: "The team members gave me great support to cover all the events for this match, and this made the difference between winning and losing."
