Hard work pays off for young athletes
ATHLETICS
WOODFORD Green Athletic Club with Essex Ladies' young athletes put on brave performances at the second National Young Athletes League match at Tonbridge School Track in Kent.
The effort was typified by epic performances from U17's Darren Southcott and Daniel Yaxley who competed in the 800m, 1500m and 1500m Steeplechase, to gain vital points for the team.
At what was one of the toughest NYAL meetings this year, Woodford finished in fourth position with 309 points.
Windsor, Slough, E&H were first with 460 points, Tonbridge second with 398 points and Shaftesbury Barnett Harriers third with 358 points.
There were wins in the boys field events for:
Aidan Lee - U17's discus A string
Sam Turner and Thomas Richards - U17's javelin A and B string, respectively
Peter Kirabo - U17's triple jump A string
Elliot Joseph - U13's shot putt A string
Joseph Dewar U13's long jump A string
Charlie Stockings - U13's high jump A string.
On the track Joseph Dewar won the U13's 200m A string and 75m hurdles A string.
Winners for the girls in the field events were:
Sam Moodie - U17's hammer B string, high jump A string and pole vault B string
Cherice McKay - U17's shot putt A string
Rachel Dean - U17's triple jump B string
Francessca Herbert - U17's pole vault A string.
On the track, Hannah Pattis-Belilli won the U13's 70m hurdles B string.
The day was capped off with exciting wins in the relays for: Peter Kirabo, Tom Larkin, Austin Joseph and Aidan Lee in the U17's boys 4x400m in a time of 3mins 34.2secs, and Raphel Duke-Okeze, Elliot Joseph, James Bongart and Joseph Dewar for the U13's boys in the 4x100m relay.
