Valiant effort by Loughton vets
ATHLETICS
BOTH the men and womens team from Loughton Athletic Club performed valiantly at the Eastern Veterans' League fixture at Bedford.
The women finished second, beaten only by Milton Keynes and coming in front of hosts Bedford and local rivals Chelmsford.
Individual wins were scored by Lorna Gaffney in the W35 100m hurdles and the high jump, and by Gabrielle Brooks in the 2km walk.
Michaela Davis scored good points in the W35 100m and long jump, while Pam Ackland-Snow performed well in the W35 shot and hammer.
The W45 section saw Pat Barclay take second place in the 400m.
Anne Heeks was second in the 1500m, Gwen Harwood picked up points in the 2km walk and long jump, and Barbara Higgins competed well in the 100m hurdles and high jump.
The men, meanwhile, were short on numbers but strong on quality and finished in fourth place overall.
Tony Babbs scored two wins, in th eM40 400m and 1500m, with Jim Harrison winning the M40 110m hurdles on his league debut, and taking second place in the high jump.
David Hobbs set new club records in the M60 100m (14.8secs) and long jump (4.05m) and Terry Casey scored good points in the M60 400m.
Mick Higgins took an excellent second place in the M50 shot, as well as scoring points in the hammer.
