BOWLS ROUNDUP
WANSTEAD Central Bowls Club will take a slender four-shot advantage into their second leg clash with Poplar in the Jackson Shield after a 64-60 shots first leg victory.
Holders Wanstead were only successful on one of three rinks. The other two rinks closely contested, but in both matches Central dropped vital shots on the last end. The second leg is scheduled for next month.
In the Foresters Triple's League, Central won three and drew one rink to overcome Buckhurst Hill 86-56 shots and take ten points. Hill took five points from the encounter.
And the club got its Redbridge Afternoon League campaign off to a fine start with a convincing 49-17 shot victory against South Woodford, gaining all six points on offer, while in their inaugural Redbridge Afternoon Mixed League appearance, Central took four points after a 48-34 win over Aldersbrook.
But Central took only two potins after losing their opening Ilford District League fixture 52-63 to local rivals Wanstead.
Central's teams also had no joy with their Walthamstow and District Thursday Afternoon matches.
The A team lost 13-24 to Buckhurst Hill C, while the C team went down 12-27 against Larsen A.
Bantham and Ongar Bowls Club started the week well with a 93-54 shots win over Warley Hill in the Brentwood and District League.
The match was tied 2-2 on rinks but Ongar gained five points and Warley four points.
The club gained another impressive home win against PML B in the Chelmsford and District League, wining 79-47 to take full points.
But they lost 71-46 to Sawbridgeworth in the Essex and Herts League.
Buckhurst Hill Bowls Club suffered a 2-6 loss to West Essex in the Simon Shield but beat Loughton 6-2 in a Clarke White fixture.
In the Thursday Fours, Hill had a gab of mixed results.
The A and C teams both won - 24-14 to Chingford Ainslie Wood B and 25-13 to Wanstead Central A respectively - but the B, D and E teams all lost.
Wanstead Bowls Club opened their ALFA League campaign with a win against debutantes North Greenwich.
The team won, drew and lost their three rinks, but won by 52-46 shots to claim four points.
Wanstead then played Woodford in a Foresters League fixture, winning at home on both rinks (17-13) and (17-10), to gain 13 points.
And, after continuing their defence of the Ilford and District League with a win over Central, Wanstead's Afternoon League prospects took a dive when they lost 6-0 on points at Woodford after losing by 44-38 shots.
