East London 21
Wanstead 30
(Essex One)
WANSTEAD ended the season on a high with a victory at basement boys East London.
The hosts, who were looking to salvage some pride for the season, ran the young Herons close in the first half.
But tries from Andy Donovan and Martin Crossan, coupled with a conversion and a penalty by the former, saw the visitors just about edge the first 40 minutes.
Number eight Crossan added his second try of the game after the restart following some good work from the forwards.
Donovan again converted and while he missed a simple penalty try in front of the posts, added a second penalty.
Wanstead's final score of the season came via an excellent individual try from winger Tom Dobinson, who sprinted virtually the length of the pitch to touch down in the corner and confirm a win that left the Herons firmly in mid-table.
Reflecting on events, skipper Paul Cristofoli said: "It was a good way to end the season. And given the amount of young players we have brought through not just in this game but during the whole season means that things look good for next year."
