(Essex Two)

LOUGHTON ended the season with a win over fellow strugglers Kings Cross Steelers that confirmed their Essex two status and moved them up to fifth in the table in the process.

An excellent pre-match Chairman's dinner arranged by Ray Curtis at Hornbeam Road ensured a significant level of support for both teams on the touchlines as the game commenced.

The hosts started really well and young Matt Thompson went over in the corner after receiving a delicious pass from the ever mercurial Owen Sayers who also slotted the difficult conversion.

The Steelers responded strongly with their backs, in particular, looking very threatening with a combination of bulk and pace in abundance. A well worked move saw the Steelers centre gallop in under the posts for a try and simple conversion. At the restart Loughton conceded a penalty which the Steelers elected to kick, taking the lead from the hosts to put the half time score at 7-10.

An inspiring half time team talk from skipper Duncan Kaye put the fire back in Loughton's bellies and they dominated the second half scoring two tries from Mike Estall, that were both converted by Sayers to make sure of a win that moved the Hornbeam Road outfit above their opponents in the table.
