Ongar's Steve Everson looks to find a way through against Stanford (EL6475-6)

ONGAR produced an assured display of attacking rugby on Saturday to claim victory at Love Lane.

The home side laid down the gauntlet early on, looking strong in scrums and confident with the ball.

They took the lead on 20 minutes when a lineout five yards from Stanford's try line ended with Kevin Spray collecting possession from a ruck and palming off a couple of challenges to score out wide.

Spray was soon in the action again, distributing a pass to Peter Hovell, who got his head down to add a second try. Steve Everson kicked the conversion.

Stanford troubled the scoreboard just once in the first half with a penalty to make it 13-3 at the interval.

The visitors came out fighting in the second period and following a break by their number 13, he laid off for the fly-half to score.

Though the game was closer than in the first period, Spray struck again mid way through the half into the right corner.

But a try from their number 14 and a penalty brought Stanford to within touching distance of Ongar.

The Love Lane men were not to be denied, though, and Adam Miles powered across at the death to settle a close affair that was played in good spirits.

Afterwards, skipper Dave Blake said: "For most of the game we played fantastic and to our strengths.

"We were missing a few key players but those who filled their boots certainly done the club proud."
