Manchester City can clinch the Premier League title with victory over rivals Manchester United next week after a ruthless 3-1 demolition of lacklustre Everton.

Leroy Sane and Gabriel Jesus struck in the opening 12 minutes at Goodison Park before Raheem Sterling added a third for Pep Guardiola’s ruthless side before the break.

Yannick Bolasie did pull one back in the second half but the hosts were poor and supporter frustration, particularly with manager Sam Allardyce, was evident.

Former City striker Shaun Goater, who represented the club in rather less celebrated era, is clearly impressed by David Silva.

The silky Spaniard was at his most influential, executing difficult passes and picking open the Everton defence with ease. His cross for Sane’s emphatic opener was well measured and the pass for Sterling’s finish was perfect.

City may have dominated possession and spent a lot of time patiently building up from the back, but they also showed they can shift gear when circumstances allow. Their second goal came from an electric counter-attack. Moments after Bolasie headed over a fine chance to make the score 1-1, Ederson launched a quick break. Sane then showed exquisite control and picked out Kevin De Bruyne in the box. The bouncing ball might have been awkward for many players but De Bruyne calmly crossed for Jesus, whose free header was too powerful for Jordan Pickford.

The Everton fans certainly did not enjoy themselves and they booed their side off. The City supporters revelled in their misfortune with their chant of “You’ve got Sam Allardyce,” perhaps the most cutting. City were outstanding in much of their play but Everton’s tactical mis-planning was a significant factor in the result. A number of Everton fans appeared to have seen enough by the interval with more than a few empty seats visible by the start of the second half.
