West Ham United have been linked with the signing of England striker Rickie Lambert after the Saints bolstered their frontline with £15m acquisition Pablo Osvaldo.

Despite the 31-year-old heading the winner on his England debut against Scotland last week, he has dropped down the pecking order at St Marys and with the arrival of the Roma man, may now look to move elsewhere with the World Cup looming on the horizon next summer.

Sam Allardyce’s Hammers and Championship side Reading are reportedly interested in signing Lambert with West Ham earmarking the former Bristol Rovers forward as an ideal partner for club record transfer Andy Carroll.

Lambert ended last season as the Premier League’s highest-scoring Englishman with 15 goals and has already opened his 2013/14 account after slamming home a late penalty in Southampton’s 1-0 win over West Brom on Saturday.
