A TEXT message from a close Spurs-supporting pal of mine summed up the general feeling about our latest signing earlier today: “Gallas medical. Sigh.”

After waiting all summer for some exciting transfer news, scrutinising ultimately unfounded rumours left, right and centre, the feeling of having an actual deal confirmed to bring a player to the Lane is one of anti-climax.

One of the main things I got excited about at the end of last season was that, with the distinct prospect of Champions League football, this summer would see us make a few select, top-quality signings to bolster our squad.

However, in just a few months we've seen next to nothing happen in the transfer market and until about half an hour until the end of the game against Young Boys on Tuesday, our hopes of making it into the group stage hung in the balance.

And now I find out 33-year-old French defender and reputed bossy-boots William Gallas is set to complete his move to Spurs.

I don't dispute that we need defensive cover and hopefully our other newbie of the summer, Sandro, who signed on the dotted line what seems like a century ago, will bolster our midfield.

The Brazilian has now actually arrived in London following Internacional's successful Copa Liberatadores campaign, which rounded off on Tuesday with a 5-3 win over Mexico's Chivas in the final.

But the fact remains that the striker situation remains uncertain and we were supposed to be giving ourself a bit more cunning and guile going forward as we try to unpick the defences of Europe.

The Joe Cole deal fell through and there's been much bluster and hot air but nothing of any substance ever since.

Can we afford to keep Roman Pavlyuchenko, who might stroke the ball into the top corner every now and again but is capable of looking like an utter donkey for the rest of the 90 minutes?

What about Robbie Keane? And is Peter Crouch on his way out?

All these and other questions need to be answers before the transfer windows slams shut.

And William Gallas isn't the answer to any of them.
