Harry Redknapp played down speculation he will take over the vacant England job after watching his side beat Newcastle 5-0 at White Hart Lane.

The 64-year-old is the leading contender to take over the role after Fabio Capello sensationally walked away from the job on Wednesday.

But the former Portsmouth boss insisted he has not been approached by the FA and said he owes it to Tottenham to remain focused on the job in hand.

“Nothing’s happened with the England job,” he said. “No one has spoken to me or Daniel about it. It wouldn’t be fair to anyone here to think about it. Daniel gave me the job, he brought me to the club when there was a public court case hanging over me.

“He looked at the case and had great faith there shouldn’t be a case. So I owe him and we’ve been great for each other. At the moment I can’t take my focus off Tottenham.”

The home fans pleaded with their manager to stay during the Newcastle match on a bitterly cold night in N17 and Redknapp was quick to acknowledge their support in the post-match press conference.

He said: “The crowd have been brilliant with me, they’ve been great. I appreciate their support. I’ve loved my time here, it couldn’t have gone better. I can’t say I’ve had any down sides. We have good players, the chairman has been as good as gold. It couldn’t have gone any better. It’s a good team, good pros, the whole group of them. I look forward to working with them every day.”
