Poyet wants Spurs to secure Champions League spot
Gus Poyet
Gus Poyet

TOTTENHAM assistant manager Gus Poyet has challenged the team to achieve a Champions League place next year. The side's 2-0 home defeat to Liverpool on Sunday meant Spurs finished the season in 11th place after a torrid start to the campaign. But Poyet has laid down the gauntlet to his players ahead of next season.

"It (finishing in the top four) is going to depend on a few things, but we need to aim there and be closer. That is through consistency," Poyet told Sky Sports News.

"You need consistency to be in the top four. Maybe we need to have a look at this game to learn.

"We have to remember when we got here we were in the bottom three. It was nervous and it was difficult to win games."

Previous boss Martin Jol guided the side to two successive fifth-place finishes, narrowly being edged out of a Champions League place by fierce rivals Arsenal two years ago on the last day of the season. But Ramos is charged with superceding that achievement next season as Spurs bid to breach the gap between the big four' and the rest.
