I imagine most West Ham United supporters will be expecting me to write about the issues around Andy Carroll, the lack of a back up striker, and a lack of goals.

Instead, I want to look at West Ham’s second most expensive signing, winger Matt Jarvis.

I for one was excited at the thought of Jarvis terrorising Premier League full backs last season when he signed for a then club record transfer fee, £10.75m.

However for me, he hasn’t found the form that we saw he was capable of at Wolves, performances which earned him a call up to the England setup.

I was also excited at having a winger who has got pace, and stats to prove he was not shy in putting the ball in the box for a striker to attack. We have not had a player like that since Matthew Etherington.

It looked the perfect combination when Andy Carroll also signed on loan last season, then permanently this summer.

But Jarvis did not get any assists last season, and only chipped in with one goal as well, which quite frankly, is not good enough.

This season has seen some improvement with regards to his stats, with him already having two assists from the current campaign.

But his overall performances have not been anything to crow over.

He seems to be lacking confidence, and while the summer signing of Stewart Downing meant the Hammers had two wingers who can deliver crosses, Jarvis has shown a lack of belief and maybe a lack of guidance from Sam Allardyce, as to what he should do when there is nobody in the box to cross to.

I hope Jarvis can prove me wrong, and maybe when Downing is back and fully fit, it will take some of the pressure off.

At the moment, he is too predictable, and opposing teams know that all of West Ham’s attacks go through him.

Let’s hope Jarvis can find that confidence and start to deliver.
