Marko Arnautovic admits the hardline approach of new West Ham boss David Moyes is starting to pay dividends.

Austria international Arnautovic was tipped to be a casualty of the Moyes regime following some underwhelming performances since his club-record move from Stoke this summer.

Instead, the 28-year-old has taken Moyes' work ethic on board and capped his best display for the Hammers with the winning goal as they beat champions Chelsea 1-0.

"Every day we have to work hard under this coach and there are no excuses," said Arnautovic.

"Everybody needs to do his main job and do two or three more jobs on the pitch.

"We are working hard as a team and I think you could see that in the game and if we continue to do that, we will be hard to beat.

"We need to keep up this level. It's a busy month and we're going to have a game every three days so it's going to be hard, so we need to recover well and go again against Arsenal on Wednesday."

Arnautovic tucked away his first goal for West Ham in the sixth minute at a raucous London Stadium.

Chelsea had plenty of time to respond, yet it was a strangely subdued display from a side with six wins from their previous seven outings.

When their clearest chance arrived, six minutes from time, Alvaro Morata dragged his shot wide.

West Ham's first win under Moyes came at a cost for Chelsea boss Antonio Conte, who conceded his side are now out of the title race following a fourth defeat of the season.

Captain Gary Cahill told the club's official website: "We have been in good form of late which is why it's so disappointing to put in a performance like that.

'We have to reflect, we have to pick ourselves up and go again. We have to try to freshen up and get the energy levels back up."
