West Ham’s Javier Hernandez has been named in Mexico’s 23-man squad for the World Cup this summer.
Hernandez, who is Mexico’s all-time leading goal scorer having notched 49 times for his country, had been named in manager Juan Carlos Osorio’s provisional 28-man squad last month and his place on the plane to Russia has now been confirmed.
The 30-year-old is the only Premier League representative in the squad and the striker will be hoping to fire his nation into the last 16, after Mexico were drawn in Group F alongside Germany, Sweden and South Korea for the tournament.
Hernandez was an unused substitute for Mexico yesterday, as former Tottenham Hotspur man Giovanni Dos Santos struck early on to secure a 1-0 win over Alex McLeish’s Scotland in their penultimate friendly before the World Cup.
The striker endured a mixed first season at the London Stadium having signed from Bayer Leverkusen last summer, scoring eight goals in 33 appearances in all competitions, with the 30-year-old falling out of favour under David Moyes towards the end of the campaign.
