Edimilson Fernandes’ chances of appearing at a first World Cup are over, after the West Ham midfielder was left out of Switzerland’s 23-man squad for the upcoming tournament.

The young midfielder had been named in Switzerland’s provisional squad last week and made his fourth appearance for the national team at the weekend, when he came on as a second half substitute during Sunday’s draw with Spain.

However, the 22-year-old’s hopes of playing any part in the tournament are now over, with the likes of former Hammer Valon Behrami and Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka being preferred to Fernandes in midfield.

Fernandes’ cousin, Gelson Fernandes, formerly of Manchester City and Leicester, has also been named in the squad.

It has proven to be a tough season for Fernandes at the London Stadium, with the 22-year-old being restricted to just 16 appearances in all competitions due to injury.
