Anton's Antics

IT was disappointing to see England fail to qualify for Euro 2008 last week, but it has given a fresh start to players like myself - players who have played in the U21s and shown they can play at that level.

Next year would have been the last championship for a lot of those players currently in the squad and it is time for a new breed to come through, and that is something that I want to be part of.

That's why I'm itching to get back from injury, play well for West Ham and hopefully show the new manager that I am capable of playing international football. I don't think should definately be an englishman but the right man for the job.

I'll hopefully will be by next week and then start pushing to get back into playing some football. It's frustrating having to watch the boys out there when playing is all that I want to do.

I can't stand to watch and get more nervous than when I'm actually playing. I know getting injured is part and parcel of football but it can be hard to deal with.

Having said that, the lads have been doing really well lately. There's been a lot of disruptions, what with the injury problems, but people have come and performed well to show that we have a big, strong squad here.

It's now up to the boys who have been out injured, such as myself, to force their way back in.

People outside of football might think that lots of competition for places can be disruptive, but nobody gets touchy with each other because they all want to do well for West Ham. If anything, the competition for places has united the squad and there is a really good team spirit at the moment.

We showed that on Sunday against Tottenham. London derbies are always difficult games but we did dug in and did well, especially Greeny, who pulled out his third penalty save of the year.

Why he isn't in the England squad I don't know. Along with David James he has been the best english keeper in the league and he definately deserves his chance in the national side because he's been great all season.

Scott Carson has been getting some stick after last week but on his Premier League performances he is up there with them two as well.

Speaking of performances, I recently had to sing at a charity fundraising dinner.

I was with Carlton Cole at an annual dinner and auction event at Richard House and I said in passing that if someone bid £5,000 then I would get up on stage and sing.

Then Coley said he would do the moonwalk at the same time.

It was meant to be a joke and we seriously didn't think anyone would pay the money. But then a guy come on the mike at the end to say there was a special surprise for us - someone had paid the money, which turned out to be my mate, Joe Cole.

It could have been embarassing but in the end I was more than happy to do for the charity and I'm told my voice isn't actually that bad.
