West Ham United have confirmed the signing of England international Stewart Downing from fellow Premiership side Liverpool.

Downing has signed a four year deal for an undisclosed fee. The winger, who is a product of the Middlesbrough academy, is the club's fifth summer signing and joins Andy Carroll, Razvan Rat, Adrian and Danny Whitehead at the club.

Speaking to the official West Ham website, Downing said: "I'm very excited. It's a great opportunity for me being here, it's a great club and I'm really excited to get going."

The winger confirmed he is fit and ready to go straight into the side this weekend for the home clash against newly-promoted Cardiff City.

"I've played a decent few games for Liverpool in pre-season, so there will be no problems on that front. It's all happened quickly, but I'm really excited and hoping to play a part on Saturday."

He made a total of 91 appearances for the Merseyside club and last season contributed with five goals and nine assists for Liverpool. The 29-year-old will wear the number 23 shirt for the Hammers this season.
