West Ham United have launched a £4.5 million bid for Belgian side Genk’s defensive midfielder Kara Mbodj, the Times has revealed.

The 25-year-old is now a top priority for the Hammers after their move for Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher collapsed on Sunday.

Manager Sam Allardyce’s latest comments add credence to the view that it will be a short-term deal for the Senegalese international, who can play as a centre-back as well as a midfielder.

The imposing 6ft 3in Mboji has been capped 14 times by his country and could link up with compatriots Diafra Sakho and Cheikhou Kouyate if he signs for the Londoners.
