West Ham United have signed former Paris St Germain winger Nene on a short-term deal until the end of the season with the option of another year.

The 33-year-old scored 36 league goals in three years at the Parc de Princes before joining Qatari side Al-Gharafa in January 2013.

Nene netted 20 times in 43 league appearances for Al-Gharafa across two-and-a-half seasons with the middle east side before being released from his contract at the end of January.

He has previously turned out for Mallorca, Celta Vigo and Monaco after moving to Europe from Brazilian club Santos in 2003.

Speaking to the club website, the experience forward said: "I am very excited and happy to be here. I'm proud to come to a really big club like West Ham and I'm going to do my best to help the team.

"I've been thinking about coming back to Europe for a few months because here the football, the ambience, everything is better.

"It's a really good challenge for me, to come to a competition like the Premier League. It's the most competitive in the world so this is the motivation for me."

Born in Jundiai in Sao Paulo, Nene began his professional career with Paulista before moving to Palmeiras in 2001.

After just one, successful, season with Palmeiras, the 5ft 10in attacker joined Santos - the former club of Pele - but was on the move again after just one season, joining Spanish side Mallorca.

Spells at Alaves and Celta Vigo preceded a move to France with Monaco in 2007. Three years with Monaco were enough to tempt PSG into making their move.

He was top scorer in Ligue 1 in the 2011/12 season and a year later won the French title with PSG before departing for Qatar.

Nene becomes the second Brazilian to represent West Ham after striker Ilan's 2010 stint.
