West Ham United are understood to be considering a move for Marseille midfielder Dimitri Payet.

The Telegraph have reported that the Hammers are keen on the Frenchman as they look to bolster their midfield options.

Co-chairman David Sullivan revealed, speaking to the club’s website, that he still wants the Iron to strengthen despite signing Pedro Obiang on Wednesday.

He said: “We are very thin on the ground with midfielders. You do get injuries and you need back-up. We have got Europe and other games that we want to win.

“There was not enough competition for places last season and this year we don’t want the same again. If the players have a bad game they will have to fight for their position back.”

Payet is seemingly one of many options that new boss Slaven Bilic is looking at after Sullivan also assured Hammers fans that the club were still interested in signing Alex Song.

The Cameroonian midfielder spent a season-long loan at Upton Park last campaign and impressed in the early stages.

Payet, 28, made 38 appearances for Ligue 1 Marseille last season and has nine international caps, in which he has scored twice.
