Diafra Sakho’s double got the new era at Upton Park off to the ideal start as West Ham United beat FC Lusitans 3-0 in their Europa League first round qualifier.

The Senegalese forward scored twice in five minutes prior to half time and skipper-for-the-night James Tomkins added a third just before the hour mark to give Terry Westley’s side the ideal foundation ahead of their trip to Andorra in a week’s time.

New head coach Slaven Bilic was introduced to Hammers supporters as the final season at the Boleyn Ground got underway with a resounding victory.

Mauro Zarate was one of several peripheral figures from last season named in the starting XI as Academy coach Westley took charge of the tie.

And the Argentine forward – who ended last season on loan at Queens Park Rangers – impressed, grabbing the assist for Sakho’s 40th-minute opener with an inch-perfect cross.

Sakho doubled up five minutes later by converting Morgan Amalfitano’s cut-back to extend the hosts’ advantage.

The game was up for Lusitans in the 58th minute when captain Tomkins grabbed a decisive third, nodding home a Matt Jarvis cross to take the tie beyond the Andorrans.

West Ham travel to Andorra for the second leg next Thursday and assuming all goes to plan, they will face either Birkirkara FC or Ulisses FC in round two.
