Defender Carl Jenkinson has returned to West Ham United on a season-long loan deal after signing a contract extension with Arsenal.

Jenkinson, 23, has signed a new five-year deal with the Gunners and has now completed a second loan switch to Upton Park for the club's final season at their historic home.

The England Under-21 cap made 32 Premier League appearances for the Hammers last term, excelling at right-back for Sam Allardyce's side.

An asking price of £10 million for the Harlow-born defender, who has one full England cap, had been mooted but it appears the former Welling United and Eastbourne Borough loanee's long-term future remains at the Emirates Stadium despite a summer of speculation.

His return had been anticipated after he was pictured last night (below) in the new West Ham kit:

Speaking to the club website, Jenkinson enthused: "I'm really happy to be back after last year. It was a good season for the club and a good season for myself.

"To be honest I just wanted to come back here and I'm happy everything's been sorted out. I've got another season here and I can't wait.

"I'm a young player and I haven't had too many experiences of different clubs, but I loved every minute of it here. Everything about it is fantastic - it's a real family club, the lads are great and the fans are great, so it ticks all the boxes you want when you join a football club.

"I've got to come in, show what I can do and prove myself to a new manager. That keeps you on your toes and I've got to go and do that in pre-season. I'm looking forward to it."

Hammers co-owner David Gold had previously confirmed the east Londoners were keen to re-sign the former Charlton Athletic defender.

"We are very working hard to try and get Carl back here," said Gold.

"We recognise this is an important season for us, being in Europe, and we will go the extra mile to ensure we have got the strongest possible squad we can muster."
