Another Saturday, another two points dropped after a wrong call by the match day officials.

Is it just me, or is there a trend developing here? This is the fourth game in a row where an incorrect decision has been made against West Ham, and the third in which it has affected the result of the game.

We’ve had two penalties awarded against us outside of the area, a foul on Darren Randolph not given, which directly resulted in a goal for Manchester United, and, most recently, the incorrect decision to send off Cheikhou Kouyate at the weekend. When will it end?

Thankfully, the FA have now rescinded his red card, meaning that he is still eligible for the next three games, but what about the two points that we might not have dropped had he been on the pitch?

It must be said that the display against Crystal Palace was defensively poor at times. I don’t know what Adrian was thinking in the lead up to the Eagles’ first goal, parrying the ball into the path of an opposition player rather than pushing it behind to safety. We were let off when Kouyate’s back pass didn’t meet his teammate as intended and was pounced on by Palace, only to be cleared off the line by Aaron Cresswell.

And then for their equaliser; Angelo Ogbonna and Winston Reid were all over the place and made it easy for Dwight Gayle to capitalise on the chance they presented him with. So I can’t definitively say that we would have gone on to win had Kouyate stayed on the pitch, but you have to admit that keeping the three points would have been a lot more likely had we had 11 men still on the field.

There is a real sense of injustice around the club at the moment. We could have been safely through to the FA Cup semi-final had Bastian Schweinsteiger’s foul on Randolph been spotted, without having to get through a replay. And we most certainly dropped two points against Chelsea when they were given a penalty outside the area in the dying minutes. If we had won against them and Palace, we would be sitting pretty in a Champions League spot right now.

I personally think there is only one thing for it – video technology being introduced. Had Mark Clattenburg been able to review the tackle before brandishing the red, I would like to think the card Mark Clattenburg he gave Kouyate would have been a different colour. The penalties awarded against us would have been free kicks (luckily other teams don’t have a Dimitri Payet to make these a terrifying prospect), and no points would have been lost.

They say that it all evens out over a season, but West Ham are bottom of the table when it comes to incorrect decisions both for and against teams this campaign. On the bright side, that should mean we’re in for a lot of good luck over the next few weeks. Come on you Irons!
