World number one Roger Federer crashed out of the Rogers Cup in Toronto on Wednesday, while Wimbledon champion Rafael Nadal continued his remarkable run.
Top seed Federer won the opening set against Gilles Simon but the unseeded Frenchman turned things around to record a 2-6 7-5 6-4 success.
Nadal, meanwhile, claimed a comfortable 6-4 6-2 victory over American qualifier Jesse Levine.
Fourth seed Nikolay Davydenko defeated Tommy Haas 6-3 7-6 (8/6), while fifth-seeded Spaniard David Ferrer moved into the third round with a 6-4 6-4 victory over Robby Ginepri.
James Blake overcame a slow start to clinch a 1-6 6-1 6-2 triumph over Jonas Bjorkman, but 12th seed Tommy Robredo suffered a 6-3 6-4 defeat against Marin Cilic.
Stanislas Wawrinka, the world number 10, was a 6-3 6-4 second-round winner against Russia's former world number one Marat Safin.
Richard Gasquet, Igor Andreev, Robin Soderling, Dimitry Tursunov, Jose Acasuso and Nicolas Kiefer also progressed on Wednesday.
