WALTHAM FOREST: Bus strike affects thousands of commuters

BUS passengers face travel misery today as drivers stage a 24-hour walk out.

Members of the Unite union who work for East London Bus and Coach Company went on strike from 3am this morning.

The action is disrupting a total of 58 routes in east London, including a number which go through Waltham Forest, including the 69, 158, 230 and 257 services.

The union members are angry about a pay freeze.

A Unite statement said its members wanted East London to “get back to the negotiating table with a fair and reasonable offer to end this dispute."

But Nigel Barrett, East London Bus company chief executive officer, said:“We need to monitor costs very carefully and responsibly.   “In the current circumstances, we are unable to offer a pay increase and have therefore had to maintain current pay levels.”

Basic pay for a driver employed by East London Bus Company ranges from £28 to 31k, a spokesman said.

Mr Barrett said: “In the current recession we feel that these rates are fair and reasonable and remain above the market average for bus drivers in London.”

I have been reading about the reason the bus drivers have decided to strike and Mr Barretts comments are unfair... I guess what the public might want to know from Mr Barrett is whether his pension or pay is affected in the same way...It is always the front line workers that get the unfair deal. In addition if Pay is frozen then what about freezing all the everyday things like fuel, council tax and even travel fare... Its funny how wages are frozen while utilities rise... in effect putting people into more debt... how is this going to end the reccession. I hope the buses strike untill a deal is made.

This article made me change my plans for the day, as I was relying on getting a 257 bus. However when I popped to the corner shop I saw them running as normal - I wonder how many people have actually gone out on strike?

So you saw the whole 257 route with them all running as normal? Out of 58 routes, 43 had no service whatsoever and 15 had a disrupted service. Sounds like quite a few were on strike to me.

A few of the routes were running for drivers that were non union or did not strike, so were put to run on certain routes. those being routes 241, 257, 396, 608, 647, 674, 678 and 687.
There was a limited service on routes 15, 25 and 115
