I am so very sad to hear of the passing of Mrs Joan Bryant. With her late husband Bill Bryant, they were the centre of some of the happiest days of my life back in the 1970s. The couple created Bury Farm livery yard and the Hawkwood Arab Stud in Chingford, which became a magnet for people of all ages including families, all drawn to their beautiful horses and a fun and welcoming place to keep theirs on the edge of Epping Forest. Joan and Bill were down to earth ordinary folk with no pretentions or time for people that did. In return, they taught people like me everything I know about breeding horses, how to handle new foals and their anxious first time mothers. Losing Bill so suddenly was a big shock to us all and of course most of all to Joan. But she carried on running the yard and also became a gifted photographer and amateur film maker. Late in life, she also took up driving with Welsh ponies. She was an unstoppable force and we loved her for it.
Aly James that was back then.
