A team of accountants came close to beating a side of Spurs legends in a charity match.

The match was played at Wanstead Rugby Club in Roding Lane North, Woodford Green, on Sunday to raise money for Hopes and Dreams which grants the wishes of children with life-threatening and limiting illnesses.

The accountants from Woodford Green firm Raffingers Stuart paid to play against a strong Spurs side featuring stars of yesteryear including Darren Anderton, Mark Falco, Andy Sinton and Tony Galvin.

With 25 minutes to go the amateurs were leading their illustrious opponents 4-1, but were forced to settle for a 4-4 draw after a late Spurs comeback.

Barry Soraff of Raffingers Stuart, said: “As a lifelong Spurs fan it was a dream come true to get out there.

“The Spurs Legends play a lot of charity matches and they have never lost, so we came close to making history.

“My dad used to say ‘Never meet your heroes’ but I have to say all the Spurs lads were superb. They signed autographs, chatted with the kids. They couldn’t have been nicer.”

As well as the match, the rugby club hosted an It’s a Knockout style competition featuring teams from the RAF and the fire brigade dressed as Teletubbies and penguins.

There were also stalls and fun activities for children. Organisers estimate they raised in excess of £4,000 for Hopes and Dreams on the day.
